If, for example, someone is using Verizon Wireless, would the Apple Phone work for them? In other words, how "universal" would this phone truly be? Would it be able to compete in international markets?
(edited: clarification)
There are two main types of cell phone system: CDMA and GSM. The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) was created in France throughout the 80's and the EU endorsed it as their official system, which caused it to spread globally. Meanwhile, across the pond, we were sitting on our little keisters and our brick analog phones and then a company called Quallcomm decided to do something six years after GSM had publically been out and they created a popular version of CDMA. CDMA is currently used by Sprint and Verizon (and I think a few Canadian carriers) and is pretty much only existent here in America. GSM is present in 78% of the world's markets.
With that said, GSM phones will not work on CDMA networks and vice versa. If Apple does make a phone, I think it would be GSM in order to capture most of the international market as well as the US. CDMA is very limited because it is not used anywhere besides a few carriers here in America.

As a long time PC user who is just getting frustrated with the windows experience, I am looking forward to seeing what Mac has to offer in the coming months.
I picked up an Iphone 4 last december and when I had a problem, being able to go to a retail location where they looked at my device for 5 minutes and then gave me a new one was great.
My wife is a mac user, and being able to go to a retail location for problems just can't be beaten.
Now I must say, I have been a Dell person all my life, heck I am currently typing this on my 6 year old dell laptop that still works fine by me. Hell, she will still be fine for fitting my laptop needs. I have been using her primarily has a desktop hooked up to many many peripherals as well as a 2nd screen for dual output.
In replacing her I have been eyeing the smaller Imac for some time now, hooking up a second screen output, and grabbing a magic trackpad that I enjoyed playing with at the Apple Store.
Anything larger than 22 or so inches would be overkill for me, as I am planning for at least two screens. Heck I think I am just using a 19 inch crt monitor that is 11 years old and my 15 inch laptop screen right now.
So a nice high quality screen with a 2nd monitor for surfing and chat room utilization would be all I need. My backup thought is a mac mini with two screens, but the Mac Mini's appear to be much lower specs when compared with the Imac.

screen is scaled 16x10 format (don't know if that's right or not) - key shape/layout is unknown.
again, these are renditions, not the product itself. Although, I'd buy one...I think the buttons would be way too small to use them. But the overall looks would be quite nice.

I'll probably come of sounding like a jerk and opening a HUGE can of worms with this, BUT...
I'm glad somebody else was thinking what I was thinking! Why do we constantly have to place a line between men and women, black and white, American and everyone else. If we actually want equality and unity and all those wonderful things, I think it's about time we stop dilineating between groups of people.
It can't be both ways... if women/minorities want equality in the work place, or government, or in society as a whole, there can't also be inequality in the world when it comes to things like this... men and women, black and white, straight and gay - they have to be equal across the board, or not at all. We can't have it both ways.
That said, bravo to Apple, U2, and anyone else involved here. Anytime you can use your power and influence to raise funds and awareness - no matter the alterior motives - it's a good thing.
Exactly, why just limit this to people with AIDS. That discriminates against people who are healthy.

Yup, I know Apple's marketing loves to be ridiculous. :p 95% of customers* wouldn't notice the difference. I'm one of the 5% who will notice it but its not like I'm buying one, my iMac G5 will keep me happy for another 2+ years.
*75% of statistics are made up on the spot ;)Yeah, considering we get so many posts about "Will this RAM work?". It seems like the populous is clueless about DDR/DDR2 and FSB.

People do not READ. It was self defense. Those robbers were BLASTING. 40 rounds exchanged.
Sucks someone had to die but that's the price you pay when you decide to commit a crime and use deadly force.. aka we're going to rob the Apple store and if anyone tries to stop us we're shooting.
I'm just glad the security guard survived this ordeal. Imagine if the headline read "Security guard dead in Apple store robbery"
This could easily of been the case.

Ha ha, You are nuts. Let me tell you how it works.
Nobody gets rich by curing a disease. That is why diabetes, AIDS, HIV etc are all treated with "Keep you alive but not cure you drugs" that you have to buy for the rest of your life. The government and drug companies are in it together and are pure evil. Ain't nobody going to cure anything unless they can keep making money doing it. Get it? Good.
I agree that the drugs are a pretty silly "solution". Spending millions to keep people alive a little longer only makes sense if there isn't a better way to spend the money. I think it makes a lot more sense to spend money on education efforts and economic development. Education and increased economic opportunity, not drugs, are going to solve this problem.

Ok so in other words you DON'T need a Core 2 Duo to run Leopard, right?
Right.
Leopard will at the very least run on 2004 era macs and most likely all the way back to 2001.

My point is...
1) The Movies take up huge amounts of storage space.
2) I hate having to always plug external drives into my iBook.
3) We need redundancy for storing these movies we buy. An "external HD" just won't cut it.
4) If I want to take my iBook on the road with me, then how are the other people in my house going to access the Movies and other media via iTV if it's stored on my iBook or some "external HD" which requires a host computer to be of any use.
I think the major problem with external hardrives, is that iTunes will organises all your content into the Music folder. I just bought a 300GB drive and would love to place all my movies in their, but at the same time I want my music on my Mac (not the external). Apple really needs to address the storage features in iTunes, as movies are large files.

99% of these are in a huff self important 'tempest in a teapot' stories;
its not required-nay not even helpful to be a fanboy to point this out-just 2 good eyes and a brain;
Alway been complainers, always will be;
If the rules are clearly spelled out and they dont follow them-then they shouldnt be crybabies in public
simple
CAREFULLY read APPLEs developers rules
follow them
dont try to breach them
you dont need a PhD to understand this

You cannot CUT and paste in SL, only COPY and paste using the built in OS shortcuts.
I hate having to open two folders just to drag a file to MOVE it, so I had to pay $4 in the MAC App Store to get that functionality...Here you go (http://lifehacker.com/#!5622046/cut-and-paste-files-in-os-xs-finder-with-automator-services). Yes, it's not built in, but that doesn't mean it can't be made to work. Meanwhile, while some have tried, there is still no good hack to put expose into Windows. At least not one I've seen. Someone gets that working, then we're in business

Thank you, Greenpeace. Public awareness is what it's all about. If Apple does not like it, maybe it's time to shape up and actually try to live up to the "environmentally friendly" image that they have been trying to create.
Implicit in this comment is that Apple "didn't like" Greenpeace and tried to shut them down. Why the assumption that Apple was behind this? If this MacExpo is anything like the MacWorlds here in the U.S., then it's not run directly by Apple., so it would've been the decision of whoever was running MacExpo to actually kick Greenpeace out...

Me neither. I wonder if the suspects were armed...or at least how smashing glass doors escalated into gunfire.
It mentions in the article that there was an exchange of gunfire, so apparently the bad guys had guns. Chalk one up for the good guys....

Finder does not support Cut and Paste for files, and is unlikely to do so. Its a philosophical difference, and to bring that up as an example of Win7 superiority is silly, at best. Apple could easily implement it, but they choose not to. Its another one of those "One button Mouse" deals, where Apple is being obstinate.
But what then is Apple’s philosophy regarding cut & paste to move a file? Drag and drop should be used instead?
This would be valid if Finder had a collapsible hierarchy in the menu bar; but it doesn’t. Who wants to alias every folder on to the menu bar? This would be valid if dragging a file (or folder) in one Finder window scrolled easily up and down. It’s dodgy at best.
Should multipleFinder window should have to be open, even if they don’t snap together so you have to spend a lot of time resizing and moving windows?
As for 2 button mice, sure Apple doesn’t have one, but that’s disingenuous, because of all intents and purposes, 1-finger click/tap = left button and 2-finger click/tap = right button.

What? You said the word Merom but didn't include a link to the guide? :p
Well anyways, if Apple could get Conroes into iMacs it would be great. A challenge I know (and I still personally think it is more likely to be a Merom iMac) but it would help to be that little bit more competitive. The rest is pretty much predictable, Merom for MBPs and eventually MacBooks and Mac Minis. Woodcrest for Mac Pro and MacServe (Macs in everything right ;) ). iMac's future is a big ?.Yeah, if they can fit a Conroe into the iMac, more power to Apple. I just hope it doesn't turn it into the blast furnace my iMac G5 was.
From what I can tell Merom is just a Conroe that can operate at a lower TDP. They're all just fabricated off the same piece of silicon. (Someone posted an image on this.)

Why? Do you have an external SSD array with a Thunderbolt interface? Power to you if so ;)

what do you man by home sync... i missed lot of info. and i could not find anything on that...
Yeah what's going on at MR? I had a meeting today that directly overlapped this event, I expected to have a recap to read. Is it possible to even see the MRLive stream? I'm confused. Any big announcements today? 80GB ipod sounds cool..at $350 is it cheaper than the previous 5th generation? I could swear the 60GB was $400. If so, this is a nice update...if somewhat lackluster when juxtaposed with the wild rumors we've been seeing for months.
Edit: apple.com is missing the big image in the middle. its 3:32 pm EST. what on earth is going on?

Samsung can easily be replaced. Apple doesn't need them.
you have that backwards.
Samsung can replace Apple as a client. Apple can not replace Samsung as a supplier.
Reason Samsung can do it is because demand for LCD, flash chips ect is out pacing supply.
Apple can not replace Samsung for the same reason. no one else has the capacity to fill those orders.
