Is this the phone that all telemarketing firms are going to use, calling you up at random trying to sell you something you don't want? Say a Palm treo?

Ugh, I know people said this alot too, but I have to go to school next week without a laptop now. But oh well, it'll be worth it once they release them, hopefully in the paris expo. Do you think there'll be a huge diff b/w MBP and MB? I'll be using it just for everyday use, and if they both came out at the same time that'd be so sweet. I'd def go for the MB.

I told her to wait it out until 9.25 at the earliest then buy it.

She has been waiting with me ever since I found out about merom in June. She broke after it wasn't announced this Tuesday.

She's going to feel regret I fear when it's announced in 10 days.If she doesn't open it, she can return it for full refund up to 14 days after she gets it. But she should understand Apple needs to stagger new model releases weekly, even when they are all ready, in order to maximize press coverage. It's Marketing 101.

Another reason for the MBP delay is the supply of Merom processors to Apple is growing at a rate that favors iMacs first then MBP later this month. Apple must build tens of thousands of new MBPs in 3 different configurations before they can announce them as "for sale today".

She can also come to her senses and phone Apple and cancel her order. It is quite irrational to order or buy a MBP right now.I ordered my MacBook Pro this morning!!!!!!!

anyway I went on the website to see the ship date as soon as I could and here are the details...

    MBPRO 17/2.16 CTO
    2.16GHz Intel Core Duo
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM- 2x1GB
    120GB Serial ATA Drive@5400rpm
    Widescreen Display
    SD 8x(DVD+R DL/DVD+/-RW/CD-RW)
    BkLit Keyboard/Mac OS
    Airport Extreme Card&BT

    Estimated Ship Date
Sep 26, 2006 (wow that date looks familiar?!?!)

    Arrival Date
    Oct 3, 2006

Either way if I get it with Merom or not I'm opening that damn box as soon as I see it.You're breaking my balls Taylor.

This is excellent evidence Apple is not shipping any more Yonah MacBook Pros. Good catch Taylor. That's perfect. What you are going to get will be a 2.33GHz C2D for sure. You might want to upgrade to the Seagate 160BG HD though. :p

Wasn't that a big thing from the Leopard announcement?

No. Developers were told to get ready, but with the developer tools, you can see that many still aren't ready, including Apple.

It was never an announced feature for Leopard.

In many ways, besides updating the performance hardware there's not a whole lot you'd expect from an update today. I mean, if Apple don't feel they don't have anything spectacular to add they might hold out until they do (remember 3Gs yawn) and focus on iOS development.

I believe that iOS instead will be the biggest evolution of iOS since 2.0 and the introductions of apps.

Contrary to what may most competitors seems to believe, apple customers don't come back for the hardware but rather the amazing software.

I wonder why Apple didn't include an IR port & remote with the Mac Pro? It also doesn't ship with Front Row.

It's especially odd considering Apple was touting Front Row as part of Leopard.

    Hmm...

Also, if you hit the EJECT key on the keyboard while you have two optical drives installed, will they both open?

    Questions, questions...

If they made it a little taller it should be easy-peasy for Apple to fit the necessary cooling. Hey, if they're making it taller, they could add a 3.5" Hard Drive which is much cheaper than laptop hard drives and we could finally get a 500GB Mini.

When you look at all those manufacturers selling harddisks in a case that fits on top of a MacMini, making it twice as high, Apple might as well sell the whole thing in one case. Call it the "Mac SuperMini".

They are not setting up for the Paris expo for a long time. There is no chance of this being for Paris, IMO. :)

    I don't think so either.

When I first glanced at it I thought it was being "made." Like they were hanging it up to be sure it was corrct. I now see that it is indeed being displayed.

Was it an economist or someone who actually understands economics? :D :p

There are people who actually understand economics?
    ;)

    mcrain, FYI,
Which "game"? *Are you "trading and investing" in companies by purchasing shares in IPOs, or are you "trading and investing" on Wall St.? *If it is the latter, then basically you are buying and selling ownership interests in companies, which has almost no affect on underlying companies.from another thread:My particular strategy involves options and a calendar spread, which means I'm taking a long and short position on the same underlying security, which creates a net zero effect. I am primarily focused on making money through the time decay of the options.

What has me wondering, is how Apple might support the 14 SATA devices that the X79 chipset will natively provide. Presumably, they will determine that their average customer only needs X SATA ports, and the rest will be left unexposed. With TB support, this may not be that big of an issue for those that really need or want 10-12 drives.
They already provide fewer USB ports than the ICH10 actually provides (12 on the chip, but Apple only provides access to 5), so it's certainly possible this sort of thinking could be applied elsewhere.

I also wonder what else they would consider denying access to in the X79 (i.e. RAID functionality in particular).

I want a device that I can check email on the go, sign documents, sketch a quick idea, circle an interesting part of an article for someone to look over, browse the web with ease, control my other computers/servers, take a picture and write some notes on it so that someone can get a better idea of what I'm thinking and countless other possibilities I haven't thought of.

I feel like this is the sort of market Apple would go for if they do consider going into some kind of 'tablet' machine. It doesn't have to move mountains, but be simplistic in form and function. I love the portability of my laptop, but would consider buying something like this if it let me do basic web surfing, play my iTunes music/videos, check email, and write with a slide-out style keyboard. But the challenge will be if they can get it at a $499 price point; that's my limit, at any rate. :(

Do you really think the answer is 2? lol.

Yes, if you assume the (9+3) is a power.

No, if you assume there is a fantom multiplier between the 2 and the (9+3).

It's a loaded question, due to incomplete specifications, yet again.

What rock are you living under?? A 5mb file is high end? Haha Why do you think the RIAA & MPAA are scared? It's soooooo easy to download music & movies illegally. Or look at YouTube, god knows how many 10mb videos are downloaded each second.

I haven't done ripping in a while, but decent encoding was about about 1Mb per minute for music, and the goal for a feature length movie was about 650Mb (The size of a CD ;)). Maybe they have gotten better, but you do realize a DVD is like 4.5Gb and it already is a lossy format?

650Mb movies are tolarable on a TV, but not a HD TV in my opinion. The few movies I did encode down, I was happy with 250Mb feature length movies at 320x200. Yes, I've been under a rock, but only for a couple years.

    HiDPI?

    DPI = Dots per inch
    PPI = Pixels per inch.

DPI is an acronym that mainly applies to the printing industry. No, your brand-shiny new ACD (seems more like BC-ACD) does not display dots. Pixels are, in fact, squares (rectangles, if you really wanna nitpick).

HiPPI is what it should be.

Is this going be another typeface/font mass misunderstanding turned commonplace?

THERE ARE NO DOTS ON YOUR SCREEN! ONLY PIXELS!

Freakin' idiots. What would your mothers say?

You are the perfect consumer. "Must ... have ... bright ... shiny ... new .... thing", whether you need it or not. So what if apple comes out with a new computer every 6 months? If the one you have does what you need it to - why do you care? If your self-worth is tied up in having the latest computer, you just need therapy. And please don't blame Apple for your debt situation.

Haha. Well said. I guess Apple added in something to the last revision of PowerBook G4s which makes us PowerBook users more down to earth. I would never get rid of my PowerBook. :D

    Who is surprised? Not me.

    Android is for:

People whose carriers don't have the iPhone.
    People who don't like Apple.
    Geeks who have to tinker.
People who are willing to settle or be talked into something that "is just as good as the iPhone."

Apple's recently reported financials show that they are doing just fine. And will continue to do so. And as the iPhone and iPad halo drives more and more people to Macs, Apple will continue to grow.

I hope that Apple continues to make strides in phones and I think that they will.

While in the past it was kind of cool to be an Apple person when we were a more exclusive club that not everyone could join, the fact that my stock is over $350 and will continue to grow helps me get over that.

    My 2.
